Description
Two pages long. On the first of two pages, this document is written from David Carson's nephew James Carson to his attorney Mathew Carson of Ashe County, North Carolina, granting him power of attorney in James's fight for his part of David Carson's estate. James Carson is from the County of Mecklenburg, North Carolina. In this document, he grants his attorney the power to get him "all my interest Intestate E? as descended to me as one the heirs at law & next of Kin of Said intestate consisting in whatever it may be land money stock Negroes & c." This document confirms David Carson's ownership of enslaved people, as well as his growing list of familial heirs, owed interest in his Missouri estate. The document continues on to grant his attorney the power to represent him, the rest is continued on the second page.
On the second page, James ends his power of attorney statement by saying, "I the said constituent notifying allowing and holding firm and valid all and whatsoever my Said attorney or his Substitutes Shall Lawfully do or cause to be done in and about the premises by virtue of their presence. In witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal this 16 day Nov in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and fifty Eight." It is then signed by James Carson, Thos D. Gillispie, Jas H. Carson, W.K. Reid Clerk of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Session, F.M. Ross Chairman on November 16th, 1858.
