June 19, 1868 Letitia Carson Proof of required land improvements for Homestead

This document is the certificate awarding Letitia Carson ownership of the plot she settled on and then cultivated for five years in accordance with the Homestead Act of 1862. Created by the Land Office at Roseburg, Oregon, this certificate says that Letitia has paid in full for her land, includes the coordinates, and then is signed by both Letitia Carson and John Kelly, Register of the Land Office on June 19th, 1868. Acquaintances, James G. Clark & Joshua Wright say that they "do solemnly Swear that we have known Letitia Carson for five years last past; that he is the head of a family consisting of two children and --------- that she is --------a citizen of the United States; that she is an inhabitant of the W ½ of NE ¼ & Fracl E ½ of NW ¼ --------- of section No. 20 ----- in Township No. 29 South of Range No. 3 West and that no other person resided upon said land entitled to the right of Homestead or Pre-emption."
