Description
In 1856, the U.S. Army built the Fort Yamhill Blockhouse at Fort Yamhill, near present day Valley Junction and Grand Ronde. It was built to limit encounters and conflicts between Indigenous people and settlers near the Reservations. It stood at the border between Grand Ronde Reservation and privately owned farmland. It was not like other blockhouses built as a refuge for whites during conflict with Indigenous people. Instead, it was a guardian of the reservation and prevented conflict. It was decommissioned in 1866.
