Title
Oct 11, 1854 Andrew Thayer Response, two pages
Description
Two pages that document lawyer Andrew Thayer's response to Greenberry Smith concerning Letitia Carson during her first court battle against Greenberry Smith. The letter establishes Letitia Carson as the Plaintiff against Greenberry Smith, the defendant, and goes on to discuss her position concerning David Carson and his estate. On the first page, Thayer's response states that Letitia "says that she affirms that her services for seven years and six months as stated in her said complaint were reasonably worth one thousand dollars" and also that she "continued to reside in the family of said David Carson decd as one of his family merely, as in said answer alleged, but she avers that she resided in said family as a servant and performed menial [sic] service as such during said period mentioned." The document goes on to conclude that Letitia denies Greenberry's claim that she was sick and unable to work.
On the second page, this letter continues on the previous page in which lawyer Andrew Thayer wrote a response concerning Letitia Carson's first case against Greenberry Smith. It goes on to discuss her children, medical aid, and land in the wake of David Carson's unexpected death and Smith's subsequent acquisition of the land. It is signed by Thayer and Grove, attorneys for Letitia Carson, as well as Jas H. Slater the clerk of the District Court of the Oregon Territory.
