Description
This document is a subpoena written from Jas. H. Slater Clerk of District Court of Benton County to Greenberry Smith during the first lawsuit by Letitia Carson. Slater writes, "In the name of the United States of America you are hereby required to appear and answer the complaint of Lutishia Carson Plfft (a copy of which is herewith served) on the first day of the next term of said court to be held in said county on the second Monday of October in the year AD 1854; or judgment by default will be taken against you. Notice is hereby given that the plaintiff will take judgment for the sum of one thousand dollars ($1000.00) if the defendant fails to answer the complaint. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of said Court this 22nd day of September AD 1854 at Corvallis."It is signed by Slater on September 22nd, 1854.
