1950 c. Aerial View Thomas Read House
Description
An account of the resource
This 1950 aerial view photograph captures the Carson's Benton County neighbors. The Reads lived nearby the Carsons in the Soap Creek Valley and are believed to have owned a child's bed that once belonged to the Carsons. The Benton County Historical Society elaborates on the photograph saying, "Central is house, with garage behind, as well as barn and sheds; at far left center is farm pond. The drive begins with a covered gate, continuing with a board fence to south of house. Laundry hangs on a wash line in yard. In clearing between two wooded areas can be seen Civilian Conservation Corps buildings; other buildings are visible in upper left corner. Highway 99 is at right edge of image, and someone is crossing road to mailbox; another figure stands on cutoff leading to gate. Foreground is fields and background is wooded hillside. Transcribed from handwritten note in red ink on verso: "T[om]Warren] P June '72". Black and white copy print; landscape."

An account of the resource
This photograph taken in 1941 clearly shows Carson Benton County lands just prior to acquisition by the federal government for Camp Adair. From the Benton County Historical Society Website: "From near Sec. Cor. 7, 12, 13, 18 T.10S., R. 4 & 5W. Looking SW up Soap Creek Valley, Coffin Butte on left. John W. Cunningham & Associates signed a contract with the U.S. War Department on August 23, 1941, to engage their services as "Architect-Engineer" to prepare the reports, designs, drawings, specifications, and other contract documents to construct Camp Adair, Benton County, Oregon. See: 1994-078.0007A-B for a complete list of the photographs."

Title
A name given to the resource
Feb. 19, 1990 Request for Plaque
Description
An account of the resource
On February 25, 1990, OSU Forestry and OSU Black Student Union co-sponsored a Benton County Black History tour. Dr. Zybach worked with Jeff Boyd, then President of the OSU Graduate and Professional Students to create and lead this tour, which also included Kathryn Bogle, fellow student Angela Sondenaa, and professor Wil Gamble, the first Black faculty member at OSU. The event included one of the first public presentations of Letitia’s story at the Tampico stop, and culminated with the planting of a tree on the OSU quad that commemorated the lives and achievements of Benton County’s Black pioneers. This photo shows a request from Jeff to College of Forestry to fund a bench and plaque by the new tree. According to Dr. Zybach “This request was turned down because of concerns that all of the plaques and monuments that had been placed around campus during the previous century “were making it look like a graveyard with a bunch of grave markers.” Not sure how many benches are typically found in graveyards, but it would be interesting to know whether this was a new policy at the time, or not. This tree was dedicated by Professor Gamble in memory of Benton County’s Black pioneers, including Letitia. Of additional interest was an old apple tree on the original Carson DLC that two other students and I named the “Letitia Carson Apple Tree,” while we were developing a cultural resource inventory (“C.R.I.”) for OSU Research Forests. It was a very old tree with good apples that a previous OSU student had photographed in 1947 and I’m told it is no longer there. However, here is how the University of Kentucky has described Letitia and the tree for many years (note numerous errors)”

Sept. 19, 1989 Friends of the Golden West Hotel Commemoration
Description
An account of the resource
This photo was taken September 18, 1989, at Kathryn Bogle's SE Tibbetts Street home in Portland, commemorating the formation of the Friends of the Golden West Hotel. This was during the time that Kathryn and Dr. Zybach became good friends, initially based on their common interest in Oregon Black History. Missing from the photo is co-founder, Michael “Chappie” Grice, but Kathryn, Dr. Zybach, and representatives of Portland Public Schools, Oregon Historical Society, and Central City Concern are shown shortly after formally developing the common objectives for the new organization. In the early 2000s, Will Bennet rejuvenated the Friends on a number of social media sites, and then on February 2, 2022, under the leadership of Kim Moreland and others, one of our major objectives was finally achieved, and the Golden West Hotel was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Dr. Zybach believes the photographer was a maid that worked for Kathryn on a weekly basis.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1844, prior to migrating to Oregon Territory, David Carson was accused of mistreating an enslaved girl named Ann Eliza, who was only 16 at the time. Though we only have limited evidence and understanding of this case and its history, it shows us that David Carson had the potential for violence and debauchery - the accusations of this legal battle - and that this behavior could have continued into his relationship with Letitia Carson.

While there is no evidence whether David ever owned Letitia, and the state of their relationship still remains unclear - the details of the Ann Eliza case prove that David did own an enslaved woman, and mistreated her in both sexual and violent ways, suggesting that he could have possibly continued this behavior into his time with Letitia. Additionally, this abhorrent mistreatment of a young Black girl provides insight into how David may have considered Letitia and suggests that their partnership was not as equal as one may think.

This item includes two pages of legal documents from October 25, 1844, concerning the Carson v White case. While they have yet to be transcribed, they offer an invaluable primary account of this monumental court case regarding David Carson's character.
