Title

August 2, 1855 Complaint by Andrew Thayer on behalf of Letitia Carson, two pages

Description

Two pages long, this document was written by Jas H. Slater, clerk of the District Court of the Oregon Territory on August 2nd, 1855 marking Leitita's second court case against Greenberry Smith. The first page of this complaint cements Andrew Thayer as Letitia's attorney and illustrates her position against Greenberry Smith in this second lawsuit. In this subsequent battle, Letitia is fighting for compensation for her cattle, which she raised, and which were taken from her when Greenberry became the administrator of the late David Carson's estate. The document states that Letitia Carson brings on the suit because she "lawfully possessed & owned twenty-nine head of cattle consisting of cows heifers, steers, & claves, which said Cattle were worth the just & full sum of two thousand dollars." Greenberry took and sold some cattle but also kept and converted them for his own use. The complaint is continued on the second page.

On the second page, this document continues establishing Letitia Carson's second court case against Greenberry Smith; this time for compensation for her cattle. This second page confirms Andrew Thayer as her attorney and justifies his decision as he believes she is owed two thousand dollars for her cattle. His belief is based on several individuals who lived near the Carson's homestead when Greenberry converted the cattle. The document is dated August 2nd, 1855, and signed by Jas H. Slater, clerk of the District Court of the Oregon Territory, and Andrew Thayer, Letitia's attorney.
